Brainspotting Consulting
with Karen Holland, LMFT

Brainspotting1

Welcome to my Brainspotting Consulting Page!

Hi, I'm Karen Holland.  If you're here, you're interested in learning how to become certified in Brainspotting and Brainspotting consulting.   I built this page so that I could provide a resource for Brainspotting clinicians and practitioners.   I have been a licensed therapist for over 20 years and I have been a Brainspotting practitioner since 2016.  I became a consultant in 2021 because I am passionate about Brainspotting and want to help other clinicians develop their skill and offer support.

Why get certified in Brainspotting?

You might be wondering if you should actually take the steps to get certified in Brainspotting.  Afterall, you can take the trainings and begin utilizing Brainspotting with your own clients right away.  But, here's what I found after trying Brainspotting with my clients in the months following the  Phase 1 training:  It didn't always work out like I thought it would.  I found myself not being sure of myself and if Brainspotting was really all that effective.  Some clients just were "meh" about it.  Some clients seemed really dysregulated.  Other clients felt "nothing."  Headaches and nausea happened.  Other weird things happened during sessions that I had no idea what to make of.

If it wasn't for me joining a consultation group and beginning the process to get certified with my beloved consultant/trainer Dr. Melanie Young, did I both get the support I needed and really begin to understand the process of Brainspotting.  I was able to ask questions about specific cases and deepen my study of the brain, mindfulness and following that "tail of the comet."  I was encouraged to take all the trainings and then eventually, I really dove in and became a consultant.

We can be really good clinicians and still struggle with all that comes up in Brainspotting.  It really is a different way to process and heal and thus, it gently demands of us to do our own work:  How to stop talking so much, how to be present and mindful, how to attune, how to let go of controlling the process, and just when to step in and gently guide.

  • Certification to be reviewed and awarded by Brainspotting Trainings, LLC.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

  • There is no timeline you need to complete between Phase 1 and Phase 2 though you probably don't want to wait several years in between.
  • You can start documenting the 50 sessions with clients as soon as you take Phase 1.
  • Brainspotting consultation group participation/hours  (free or paid) do not count toward the six consultation hours required for certification. However, consultation groups are highly recommended for your support and development as a practitioner.
  • You generally look to hire a consultant after Phase 2 and when you're ready to get certified but many people hire someone right after Phase 1.
  • Generally people meet once a month for the six consultation sessions but some meet more frequently to "get it done" and others take their time and spread them out.
